Parts and accessories of motor vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705 fall in heading 8708, which has 16 lines in our file, most at 15%. It covers bumpers, safety seat belts, brakes, gear boxes, drive axles, road wheels, suspension systems, radiators, silencers, clutches and steering parts. But not every car component belongs there. The notes to Section XVII exclude general parts and items named more precisely elsewhere, so engines go to chapter 84, heading 8407 or 8408, with parts in 8409. Tyres go to chapter 40, heading 4011. Batteries go to 8507, and lamps often to 8512. So the first question is not which car it fits, but what the article is. IGST has its own wording: Notification 9/2025 has entries for tractor parts at 5%, whereas parts for other vehicles appear at 18% in the entries we read, and those should be checked for your part.

Notes for buyers

Used parts raise policy questions separately from duty, so read the import conditions at the DGFT before ordering. Kits of parts sold to build a vehicle can be treated as the vehicle itself under the interpretation rules and exemption entries, at very different rates: see cars. For an ordinary shipment, the small tool has 15% and 18%. For the whole sum, go to the full calculator.

Questions people ask

What is the HS code for car spare parts in India?

Start with heading 8708, parts and accessories of motor vehicles, and then the subheading for the article: bumpers at 8708 10, brakes at 8708 30, gear boxes at 8708 40, wheels at 8708 70. If the part is named elsewhere, it moves: filters to 8421, engines to 8407 or 8408, tyres to 4011, batteries to 8507. Search for it to compare.

Are tractor parts charged differently from car parts?

For IGST, yes. Notification 9/2025 has specific entries at 5 per cent for certain tractor parts, such as rear wheel rims, bumpers, brake assemblies, gear boxes and transaxles, whereas similar parts for other vehicles fall under other entries. The basic duty line can differ too, as 8708 10 10 is for tractors. Open a line to compare the entries.

Is duty lower on auto parts from countries with a trade agreement?

It can be, if your supplier country has an agreement with India covering that line and the goods meet its rules of origin. The rate comes from a separate notification for that agreement, which we do not list. Check that notification, get the certificate, and compare with the small tool on the certificate of origin page.
