Steel falls in two chapters. Chapter 72 covers iron and steel themselves: pig iron and ferro-alloys, then semi-finished and flat-rolled, bars, rods, angles and wire, in separate groups for non-alloy steel, stainless steel and other alloy steel. Our file has 528 lines here, most at 15%. Chapter 73 covers articles of iron or steel, such as tubes and pipes, structures, tanks, fasteners, chains and many household goods, with 290 lines, most at 15%. Within chapter 72, the line turns on measurable details: width above or below 600 millimetres for flat products, hot or cold rolled, coated or not, thickness, and carbon content. So a mill certificate is the document that settles classification. Trade remedies are common on steel products, and we hold no list of them, so check them separately.

The small tool is set to ₹20,00,000 with 15% duty and 18% IGST. That gives ₹3,00,000 duty, ₹30,000 surcharge and ₹4,19,400 IGST. Read other duties on imports for how a trade remedy sits on top.

A safeguard duty on flat steel

Notification 02/2025-Customs (SG) imposes a safeguard duty on certain non-alloy and alloy flat products of headings 7208 to 7212, 7225 and 7226: 11.5% for imports from 21 April 2026 to 20 April 2027, then 11% to 20 April 2028. It does not apply at or above stated CIF import prices per tonne, from USD 675 for hot rolled coils to USD 964 for colour coated coils. It also excludes stainless steel, tinplate and other named products, and imports from listed developing countries with stated exceptions, so read the text for your product. Our tariff search does not show this duty.

A weight check comes next: steel usually hits the payload before the volume, so run your figures through the container loading calculator.

Documents worth asking for

Ask for a mill test certificate that shows the chemical composition, the width and thickness, and the coating. These decide the line. Steel products may also be subject to mandatory standards, and to import monitoring systems, which we did not read for this site. Check them with your broker before you buy.

Questions people ask

What is the HS code for steel coils in India?

Flat-rolled products of non-alloy steel are in headings 7208 to 7212. Hot-rolled coils of 600 millimetres or wider, not clad or coated, go to 7208; cold-rolled to 7209; clad, plated or coated to 7210. Below 600 millimetres, see 7211 and 7212. Stainless flat products are in 7219 and 7220, and alloy steel in 7225 and 7226.

Are steel pipes in chapter 72 or chapter 73?

Chapter 73. Tubes, pipes and hollow profiles are in headings 7303 to 7306, sorted by the way they are made: seamless, welded, or cast. Their fittings go to 7307. Bars, rods and angles stay in chapter 72 as they are long products rather than articles. Your supplier should state seamless or welded on the documents.

Why does the rate for my steel differ from the line I found?

The rate here is the tariff rate read from the compilation and Finance Acts. Notification 45/2025 may reduce it, and an anti-dumping, countervailing or safeguard duty may add to it, based on the country and the product. Check for those measures and, if you qualify, enter the effective rate in the calculator.
