Rate shown: the tariff rate before exemptions, from the CBIC compilation with Finance Act changes laid over it. Open a line for IGST and exemption entries. General information, not a classification ruling.

An Indian tariff line has eight digits: the first six follow the international Harmonized System and the last two are national. This search reads 12,522 lines from the chapter files published by CBIC, across 97 chapters, and each result shows the tariff rate in the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act. That rate is where the sum starts, not always where it ends, because Notification 45/2025-Customs lowers duty on many goods under conditions. So each line also lists the exemption entries that mention its code, and the IGST entries of Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate). The chapter files carry footnotes up to 2024, so 766 lines have been updated from the schedules of the Finance Acts of 2024, 2025 and 2026, and they say which Act. Chapter 4 could not be read and is missing.

How to read a result

Each line shows the code in the 4-2-2 layout used in the schedule, its description, and the tariff rate. Many lines are short, such as "Other", and only make sense under their parent: the result adds the subheading text before the description, and an opened line adds the heading. Some rates have two parts, such as a percentage or a sum per kilogram. We reread these lines in the chapter PDFs: the rate now says "whichever is higher" or "whichever is lower" as printed, and the calculator asks for the quantity. Twelve lines print both parts with no rule, and they are marked not verified.

Where the lines come from, and the gaps

Lines were read by program from CBIC chapter PDFs, then 766 of them were changed according to the Finance Act schedules. Notifications continue through the year, so check a line that matters at the source. The full limits are on the method page.

Licences and import policy

Whether goods may be imported at all is a separate question from what duty they bear. Restrictions are set out in the ITC(HS) schedules of the DGFT, whose site asks for permission by email before reproduction, so its policy column is not copied here. Check it directly for any restricted or prohibited goods before you place an order.

From a line to a number

Once you have a line, take its rate to the duty calculator, which also searches the tariff from inside the form. For a quick check on a value you know already, use the small tool on this page. It assumes the 10% surcharge, which some goods do not pay in full.

Questions people ask

How do I find the HS code of a product in India?

Search for a plain word such as footwear or valves, then read the heading and the note of the chapter. Classification follows the wording of the tariff and its section and chapter notes, not the name you use in trade. If two lines seem to fit, a customs broker or an advance ruling can settle it before you ship.

Why does the search show a rate that differs from my bill of entry?

The search shows the tariff rate. A bill of entry applies the effective rate, after any exemption notification you claim and qualify for, plus surcharge and IGST. A later notification may also have changed the rate after we read our sources. The calculator lets you overwrite each rate with the figure you can support.

Is a rate of Free the same as no duty at all?

No. Free means no Basic Customs Duty on that line. The surcharge then has nothing to act on, but IGST still applies on the value at the rate of the goods, unless another entry exempts them. A smartphone part or a personal computer entered at Free can therefore still carry eighteen per cent IGST at the port.
