Toys belong to chapter 95, which covers toys, games and sports requisites. Heading 9503 takes in tricycles, scooters, pedal cars, dolls, puzzles, reduced-size models and other toys. Our file holds 4 lines for this heading: the most common tariff rate on them is 70%, and the chapter as a whole has 63 lines, most often at 20%. So a toy can bear a much higher tariff rate than a game or a sports good, and it pays to check the description of each line. IGST on toys has more than one entry in Notification 9/2025, at 5% for toys such as tricycles and scooters (other than electronic toys), and 18% for electronic toys and others. Notification 45/2025 includes an entry for parts of electronic toys used in manufacturing, under conditions. Quality rules and licensing are outside this page.

The stack on ₹1,00,000 of toys at 70%

Duty ₹70,000, surcharge ₹7,000, IGST at 18% on ₹1,77,000 is ₹31,860: total ₹1,08,860, or 108.9% of the value. At a tariff rate that high, every assumption matters, so get freight right in the full calculator. If you switch to an IGST of 5%, the small tool shows how much the slab alone changes the bill.

Where toys get confused

Items that look like toys may be classified elsewhere. Sports equipment, festive articles and video game consoles have their own headings in the chapter, and collector's items may go to chapter 97. Chapter 95's notes list what it excludes, so read them before you settle on a line. Courier shipments of a few samples are possible, but the courier limits and the gift restriction are a separate matter.

Questions people ask

What is the HS code for toys in India?

Heading 9503 is the main one. Its tariff items 9503 00 10 and 9503 00 20 cover tricycles, scooters, pedal cars and similar wheeled toys and dolls' carriages, electronic and non-electronic, and 9503 00 30 onward covers other toys. Video game consoles, card games and table games go to heading 9504, and sports goods to 9506.

How much duty is charged on imported toys?

The lines in heading 9503 that we read show 70 per cent as the tariff rate, with one line for parts of electronic toys at 20 per cent. At 70 per cent duty, 10 per cent surcharge and 18 per cent IGST, the total comes to about 110 per cent of the value. Other duties or a notification may change that, so verify the current position.

Can I import toys without any licence or test?

A low tariff is not your only hurdle. Toys sold in India are subject to quality control rules, which are outside what we read for this site, so we cannot tell you the current requirement. Check with the Bureau of Indian Standards and your customs broker before ordering, because failure at the port is expensive to undo.
