Machines are classified by what they do. Chapter 84 has more lines than almost any other, so start with a word that describes the function.

Chapter 84 covers nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances, and parts thereof. It is among the largest in the tariff: our file holds 1,085 lines here, and the most common tariff rate is 7.5%, on 849 lines, with 10% (84), 15% (69), Free (57) next. Headings are arranged by function, so a pump, a compressor, a machine tool or a textile machine each has its own place. A machine that could fit two headings is placed by the principal function it performs, with special rules for multi-function machines, in the notes to Section XVI. Parts generally follow the machine, either in their own heading or in a parts heading, unless the notes send them elsewhere. Notification 45/2025 has many entries for specific machinery, often tied to a named use or a named industry, and conditions can apply.

How large a shipment behaves
On ₹20,00,000 of machinery at 7.5%, the small tool shows duty of ₹1,50,000, surcharge of ₹15,000 and IGST of ₹3,89,700 on the increased base. In this case, IGST is by far the largest item, which is good news for a registered manufacturer who may be able to take the credit: see the landed cost calculator.
Project imports under chapter 98 and trade agreements may provide other routes. Size also matters: for large equipment, check the door height in the container dimensions before booking, as flat racks and open tops follow different rules.
