The first question for any garment is whether the fabric is knitted or woven: this picks the chapter. Search the lines below, then estimate the duty.

Clothing falls in two chapters of the tariff, and the fabric decides which one. Knitted or crocheted garments go to chapter 61, and garments that are not knitted or crocheted, in practice mostly woven, go to chapter 62. So a T-shirt at heading 6109 and a woven shirt at heading 6205 are in different chapters, even if they look alike on a rail. Our file holds 445 lines for the two chapters. The most common tariff rate is 20%, on 271 lines, and others include 20% or Rs. 145 per piece, whichever is higher (18), 20% or Rs. 135 per piece, whichever is higher (16), 20% or Rs. 65 per piece, whichever is higher (13). Several rates add a rupee sum per piece, a form used for many garments: the higher of the two generally applies where the tariff says so. IGST on apparel in Notification 9/2025 is divided into two entries, at 5% and 18%, by reference to the description and a sale value, so read those words before you pick a rate.

What decides the line

  • Knitted or not: the chapter.
  • Type of garment: the heading, for example shirts, trousers, dresses, underwear.
  • Men's, women's, or children's: often the heading or subheading. Babies' garments have their own headings.
  • Fibre: the subheading, as cotton, synthetic fibres and others are listed apart.

Duty on a sample shipment

The tool above has a ₹2,00,000 customs value at 20% and 5% IGST: duty of ₹40,000, surcharge ₹4,000 and IGST ₹12,200. Change the IGST rate to see the effect of the higher slab. Rates of Basic Customs Duty on garments from some countries may be reduced under trade agreements, if the origin rules are met: see certificate of origin. Worn clothing is a different case: it falls in heading 6309, and policy conditions apply. Check those in the DGFT schedule. Take your final rates to the full calculator.

Questions people ask

What is the HS code for a T-shirt in India?

T-shirts, singlets and other vests, knitted or crocheted, are in heading 6109. Cotton ones are at 6109 10 00, and other textile materials in the 6109 90 lines. If the shirt is woven and not knitted, it moves to chapter 62, usually heading 6205. Check the fabric with your supplier, because the two have different lines.

How is duty worked out when the rate says Rs per piece?

In the chapter files we reread, the clothing lines with a sum per piece add the words whichever is higher, so duty is the larger of the percentage of value and the rupee sum times the number of pieces. Pick the line in our calculator and it asks for the number of pieces, then does the comparison for you on your own figures.

Does clothing bear 5 per cent or 18 per cent IGST on import?

Two entries in Notification 9/2025 cover apparel: one in the 5% schedule and one in the 18% schedule, split by description and sale value per piece. Open a line in the search tool to read them. Import has no retail sale value by itself, so how the words apply to your goods is something to confirm with your broker.
