HS code for furniture imported into India

Independent site, not a government service. General information, not customs advice.

Chapter 94 sorts furniture first by type and then by material. Bulky goods also ship by volume, so a CBM check sits beside the code search.

Furniture falls in chapter 94, which also covers bedding, lamps and prefabricated buildings. Seats go to heading 9401, whether or not they convert into beds. Other furniture goes to 9403, sorted by the material and sometimes by the room: metal for offices, wood for kitchens or bedrooms, plastics, and bamboo or rattan. Mattresses and bedding go to 9404, and lamps to 9405. Our file holds 74 lines in the chapter, most often at 25% and sometimes at 10% (14). That is a tariff rate, before any exemption. IGST on furniture has two entries in the notification we read: 5% for furniture wholly made of bamboo, cane or rattan, and 18% for other furniture and parts. As furniture is bulky, its freight is often a large share of cost, and freight also enters the customs value, so it is worth measuring before ordering.

The sum at a 25% tariff rate

On a customs value of ₹1,00,000: duty ₹25,000, surcharge ₹2,500, IGST at 18% ₹22,950, total ₹50,450, or 50.4%. If the goods are wholly of bamboo, cane or rattan, and the 5% entry fits, the total falls. Open a line in the search tool to read those entries. For a fuller calculation with freight, use the duty calculator.

Why volume comes first

Furniture usually fills a container before it reaches any weight limit. The tool on this page starts at 80 cartons of 120 by 80 by 60 centimetres, which is more than a 40 foot box's nominal volume could easily take after gaps. Measure the packed size, not the assembled size. Then use the container loading calculator and carry the freight to your landed cost, where you may see that it outweighs the difference in supplier price.

Questions people ask

What is the HS code for wooden furniture in India?

Wooden furniture other than seats goes to heading 9403: wooden office furniture in 9403 30, wooden kitchen furniture in 9403 40, wooden bedroom furniture in 9403 50, and other wooden furniture in 9403 60. Seats with wooden frames go to 9401 instead, by type. Parts are in the last subheadings of each heading, so check whether you are importing complete goods.

What is the import duty on furniture in India?

Most chapter 94 lines in our file show 25 per cent, and some show 10 per cent. On ₹1,00,000 at 25 per cent with 10 per cent surcharge and 18 per cent IGST, the stack comes to about ₹52,500. Check the exact line and any notifications, and add freight into the customs value before you compare against local prices.

Is flat-pack furniture classified as complete furniture?

Generally, yes. Under the General Rules for Interpretation, an article presented unassembled or disassembled is classified as the complete article, if it has the essential character of that article. So a boxed bookcase is treated as a bookcase, not as loose boards. Loose parts for your own assembly, not forming a kit, may instead fall under the parts lines.
